Our sports podiatrists are specialised in correcting the mechanical misalignment of the foot and ankle and addressing the exact tissues that are under stress with our advanced manual therapy techniques. Studies have well documented the benefits of manual therapy to help improve movement, function and pain reduction. One of the aims of our manual therapy is to rehabilitate the feet which helps to reduce reliance on external aids such as orthotics.
People generally feel more comfortable, stable and stronger on their feet without the use of orthotics or any special footwear, even for the elderly.
Depending on symptoms and medical history, some patients will experience instant pain relief, improved flexibility and stability after initial treatments. In other cases, it necessitates more time before treatment begin to gain traction. Once getting past the initial speed bumps, patients will notice fundamental changes leading to significant health improvements to their feet. There is no doubt about healthier feet promote better lifestyle and well-being! Regular adjustments with manual therapy help to preserve and prolong the health of your feet.
We don’t just treat pain, we identify and correct the underlying dysfunctions of the body before they become symptomatic and affect your lifestyle. Through evidence-based functional assessment, we collect measurable and reliable data that allows us to calculate your risks of pain, injury and early degenerative changes of your feet. The data would give reliable baseline measurements to evaluate the improvement of your intervention, and not just simply judging your improvement by pain.
Orthotics are great to alleviate some of your foot and leg symptoms. However, they do NOT correct the body’s dysfunctions. They support your feet and legs only at the time when you are wearing them. Without appropriate corrective or rehabilitative care, you can wear orthotics for many years and not get any improvement of your feet. Why just maintain or accommodate the problem by only wearing orthotics if there is a way to improve your body? We don’t settle with good result, we aim for correction of the body to optimise function and reclaim your health.
We want to make your feet more comfortable and stable rather than relying on external devices such as an orthotics. Imagine having the freedom of your feet without worrying about your orthotics and pain.
In fact, most of our patients do not have to wear orthotics or sacrifices the shoes they love to feel better.
There are conditions orthotics would make positive effect to your body and contribute to your rehabilitative treatment. We assess your lower body thoroughly and provide genuine advice whether if orthotics can help you. If indicated, orthotics may be advised as part of your rehabilitation plan. However, most of our patients do not have to wear orthotics or sacrifices the shoes they love to feel better. Discover how .
Lymphedema and Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)
YES! The laser treatment unit that we use is the ONLY lymphedema treatment that has been trialled in a randomised double blind study. The laser works very effectively in about 30% of patients and with some effect in about 50% of patients. Overall 80% of lymphedema patients would achieve some positive effect with our laser.
Laser has been used since the 1960’s and there have been no reported negative effects. We do not use the laser over active cancer sites. Our laser treatment unit is a Class 1 laser and it will not burn, or raise the skin temperature. Therefore totally painless. It will not interfere with pacemakers or implants.
A study has not been done for primary lymphedema patients, but we have several individual patients who have reported benefits for primary lymphedema.
Our hand-held unit is the same wavelength as the scanning laser, however, the scanning laser is usually a much more expensive treatment and treatment time is typically longer.
Unlike our laser unit, the scanning laser has not been trialled in a double blind trial to prove its effectiveness in lymphedema.
The laser affects the individual cells and re-energises them to be more active. This new energy helps to break up fibrous tissue and produces positive effects in the body as enhanced blood and lymphatic flow, and photo-mediated neural responses.
About Fungal Nail Laser Treatment
Fungal infection can be picked up from any public barefoot areas such as swimming pools, public shower and changing rooms. However, nail salon is by far the most common place where ladies get fungal nail infection.
The biggest risk factors in the development of fungal nail infection include; occlusive, dark, warm, and moist environment facilitated by general poor hygiene of the foot
A fungal infection is generally caused by a combination of these 3 factors; excessive thick skin, skin moisture and direct contact with pathogenic fungal organisms.
Use of artificial nails and nail polish can also contribute to the growth and spread of a nail fungal infection. As mentioned above, the occlusion of the nail “suffocates” the nail and the fungus can grow freely without being detected. Not only that, the nail polish can often be contaminated with fungal spores and can spread as you apply them on other nails. YES, fungal spores can survive in nail polish!
If you are on antibiotics or corticosteroid medications which suppress the immune system, you have a higher risk of picking up a fungal infection. This goes for other medical conditions such as diabetes and circulation problems which affect the body’s ability to resist any fungal infections.
Apart from the factors mentioned above, physical trauma to the nail such as wearing tight shoes, dropping heavy object on the nail and natural thickening of the nail as we age also increases the risk of fungal nail infection. Injury to the nail creates an opening for a fungal organism to get into the nail and start an infection.
Delaying treatment for fungal infection can lead to permanent damage to the toenails.
The treatment is associated with a warm sensation under the nail bed and the patient generally describes no major discomfort. However, we have found a small majority of people have lower heat threshold than the others. Even if that is the case, any discomfort during treatment would be tolerable and not constant.
Toenail growth is estimated at 1.62mm per month on average for a generally healthy adult. So, do not be disappointed if you cannot see visible improvement after a few weeks. We usually start to see clear growth at the base of the nail after 3 months.
About Shockwave Therapy / Heel Pain
This is an evidence-based treatment for heel pain and Achilles tendinosis. Scientific studies show that medically induced shockwaves can cause a beneficial reaction in soft tissue through a few different ways:
- overstimulates the pain nerve fibres to block an increase in pain stimuli and therefore intensifies the analgesic effect (Gate Control Theory).
- Produces an anti-inflammatory effect (Inhibits the COX II enzyme)
- Promotes healing by stimulating fibroblast (soft tissue cells) production for soft tissue healing- tendon, ligament, fascia, muscle; osteoblast (bone cells) production for bone healing
- Breaks down calcification deposits and scar tissuesIn short, when applied where pain occurs, shockwaves produce an analgesic effect, increase blood circulation and facilitate the repair process.
Shockwave treatment protocols have been developed based on extensive clinical research. One course of treatment for an injured/painful area is usually between 3-6 weeks, with the shockwave being delivered at 1-week intervals. The shockwave energy pulses are applied directly to the affected area via a handpiece held against the skin. For most conditions, between 2000-3000 pulses are being applied to the area each time. Treatment effect will vary between people and injury being treated. Many of our patients have experienced an immediate pain relief from one treatment session after suffering for years. Generally, the relief could last up to 7-10 days after the first treatment. The treatment effect accumulates with repeated treatment for longer lasting relief.
After examination of the affected area, shockwaves are applied via a handpiece held against the skin. The initial phase of treatment may cause some deep pain however this indicates correct targeting of the problem area. This is usually followed by numbness or heaviness in the area and the latter phase of the treatment feels less painful. The treatment sessions are of 5-10 minutes duration during which you may receive up to 3000 pulses. Many patients walk out of the treatment feeling immediate relief of pain.
AFTER THE TREATMENT: You may feel some soreness which may intensify on the night of treatment. Simple analgesia and icing might be required to control this pain. There might also be some minor bruising in the treatment area. You should rest from aggravating activities for 2-3 days after treatment as your practitioner will discuss with you.
SIDE EFFECTS: Post-treatment pain as above. Local bruising – uncommon and minor. Unlike cortisone injection and surgery, tendon rupture has not been reported following radial shockwave therapy,
About Nail Bracing
Most patients report symptomatic relief in just 30 minutes or less.
The correcting forces work for approximately 3-4 weeks. After this time, a new brace will be applied to the nail plate to reinforce the changes.
It depends on duration of the problem, sharp of the toe, and size, thickness and curvature of your toenail. The band grows with the toenail, minimal of 2-4 applications may be needed for long lasting result. Complete correction of the toenail could take longer.
Not at all. There are no restrictions. The brace is invisible, so you won’t need to hide your nail!
